A journey through the writings of the world

This generative installation, composed of two superimposed LED matrices, rises 6 metres above the street. Its two pixelated grids form a double ceiling, revealing a chromatic and pointillist creation whose various colour levels blend in the viewer’s retina. Inspired by the research of artist Fred Sapey-Triomphe on writing characters and digital colour harmonies, Unicode Haïku Extension is a playful and poetic work that offers viewers an immersive and colourful journey through the world’s different scripts using light.

About Fred Sapey-Triomphe

Fred Sapey-Triomphe is a digital artist born in 1963, who lives and works in Paris, France. A graduate of École Boulle, ENSBA Paris, and UFA Kyoto (Japan), he creates large-scale digital art installations using light as his primary medium. His interactive digital installations, titled SPIM (Structures for Producing Images in Motion), respond to site-specific parameters through color, light, movement, and sound. This visionary visual artist, who quickly turned to photography and video, draws on references from Op Art, kinetic art, and manga, while harnessing technology to create immediate visual experiences. He has created monumental permanent light works in public spaces that can be seen at Paris Montparnasse (Electro spiralis) and near the Stade de France (PixelAvenue). In 2022, he participated in the Festival of Lights in Lyon with the work UNICODE 3D.
For several years now, Fred Sapey-Triomphe has sought to engage audiences in each of his projects by creating participatory works—among others, at the Centre d'Art Contemporain de Basse Normandie in 2012, at Centre Pompidou Paris and Metz in 2013 and 2014, at Centre Muse in Metz in 2019, and in 2021 in Montreuil with the PixelFaçade project for the Un Regard Neuf 3 festival. Alongside his digital and light-based work, Fred Sapey-Triomphe continues his visual art practice in painting and creates installations and murals. His most recent is a commission from the City of Montreuil for Une Construction / Une Œuvre with real estate group SEPIMO.
